10 unexpected places + times to hear God's voice

Recently someone asked me what the perfect time is for God to talk to you. Right after that, a woman shared with me how she was super worried about her daughter who "wasn't in a place to hear from God."So what is the perfect place to be in, or the perfect time, to hear God's voice? Here's 10...

When you've sinned

The very first voice Adam and Eve heard after they sinned was God's. He's still doing this. So being in sin is a perfect place and time to hear from God. Go pray THAT for your kids who are still out getting their testimony!

When you're asleep

Ever thought about the most common way God communicated with all those people in the Bible stories you've read?Dreams and visions.Apparently God knows that when we're asleep, we're more inclined to shut up and listen.

When you think God has deserted you

In your mind you KNOW God will never leave or forsake you or someone you love, but your heart isn't always on board with that.Yet, God spoke to Elijah in a still, small voice when Elijah was hiding out in the cleft of a rock, feeling like he was totally alone and wondering where God was.The disciples got quite a shock when Jesus showed up as they huddled in a room after the resurrection. A visit totally not on their radar. And what about Gideon? That insecure, discouraged Israeli who took his wheat to the wine-press to process it without being seen by the nasty Midianites? An angel showed up with a message for Gideon. Now, if that was me, I'd be so stoked that God sent an angel to talk to me, I'd probably forget the message. But not Gideon. He got the message. He just had a hard time believing it was true. He even argued with God about it.The point is... God talks to those who feel that He's not on speaking terms with them.

When you're desperate

Years ago I was praying for our oldest son, who was about to leave for a Discipleship Training School with Youth With a Mission. David knew the Lord, but he was at that age where he was trying to find his own identity and purpose in life.Think: Mom + epic worry about her son = desperation.Caught up in my concerns, I was interrupted in my anxious time of prayer by a booming voice behind me saying, “I will.”(Yes, it was audible, and I was taken aback. I even looked to see who was talking to me.)Contained within those two words, "I will," was a lot of information. I immediately knew that the Lord was both promising me those things for which I prayed and correcting me in my lack of trust in Him concerning my son.

When you're facing huge obstacles

In the New Testament, God spoke to a man named Joseph who had just found out his fiancé was pregnant... and not by his doing.Talk about STRESS!God spoke. Joseph listened to the Lord's message and married the woman, thus becoming the stepfather of Jesus.Expect to hear the Lord's voice when you're under stress and facing a situation you have no idea how to handle.

When you're not a follower of Christ

Abimeleck was a king who met up with Abraham. The guy didn't know the Lord, but that didn't keep him from admiring Abraham's sister, Sarah. So he asked Abraham if he could marry her. Abraham said yes.Problem was—Sarah was Abraham’s wife as well as his sister.Abraham had conveniently neglected to mention to Abimeleck the wife part of his relationship with Sarah. (Men can be so clueless about details at times.)So God showed up in a dream to Abimeleck and warned him that he was as good as dead because of this mistake.Wisely, Abimeleck promptly returned Sarah to her husband. In his book Dreams and Visions: Is Jesus Awakening the Muslim World? Tom Doyle shares stories of the multitudes of Muslims across the Middle East who are experiencing a supernatural visitation of Jesus in the form of dreams and visions.God loves people who don't know Jesus. He talks to them. He hasn't forgotten about those you love who aren't Christ followers yet.

When you least expect to hear from God

Remember Saul... renamed Paul—the guy who took off for Damascus to kill some Christians?Yah, that guy.Saul's journey got interrupted by the blinding arrival of Jesus who stood in the middle of the road waiting to talk with Saul. The experience knocked Saul off his horse and changed his life... to put it mildly.

When you seek the Lord with all your heart

There's a God promise you can bank on in Psalm 95:6-8 where God promises to speak to you if you refuse to harden your heart, then humble yourself, and come before Him in worship.

Come, let us worship and bow down, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker. For He is our God, and we are the people of His pasture and the sheep of His hand. Today, if you would hear His voice, do not harden your hearts, as at Meribah.

When life is good

God DAILY walked and talked with Adam and Eve in the Garden before they had their epic fall into sin.Since God has taken care of the sin problem in your life, which is what salvation is all about, He now wants to hang out and talk with you on a DAILY basis. Especially when you can enjoy the goodness of life together.

When you know you're as helpless as a lamb

The Great Shepherd will speak. As one of His sheep, it's your birthright to hear His voice. You may just need some help learning HOW to hear Him.If you can relate to the need to hear God's voice in the midst of ANY situation in your life, then I invite you to ask yourself:How can I hear the voice of the Lord more often and more clearly? If it's time to take your relationship with the Lord higher up and further in?
