How to Respond to Same Sex Marriages

It’s been an interesting ride this last week with all the fur flying on social media over the recent decision by the Supreme Court to legalize same sex marriages.

I found myself frustrated at believers and unbelievers alike. They were rude, cruel, unkind, and even hateful.

I wanted to grab more than a few people and require them to take a time out.

Christians embarrass me at times.

Same sex marriages are about people we are called to love

We are called the people of the Cross, because we love people… even if they disagree with us or hold different values than we do. Even when they hate us, slander us, reject us, or murder us.

Love is our call. Love is our mission. Be it ISIS, the KKK, your neighbor, your parents, pastor, or those who choose a same sex marriage.

Please don’t forget that. And please act like you believe it.

It is interesting that Jesus never wavered from his kingdom convictions, but He also led in such a way that people were drawn to Him, even if their personal values did not line up with His. They felt safe, they were honest, and their lives were ultimately transformed by the power of His presence. Somehow, He engaged them in such a way that they wanted to embrace and walk in the truth that He modeled and taught—that’s kingdom transformation! – Glen C. Burris, Jr, President, The Foursquare Church

Love wins

You know that, don’t you? Rosaria Champagne Butterfield’s My Train Wreck Conversion is a perfect example. She was a leftist lesbian professor who despised Christians, yet somehow became one.

And in case we forget… we are living in a secular society. Why should we expect it to act Christian? The world I grew up in doesn’t exist anymore. But love does.

You’ve probably have lots of examples where love has dramatically impacted the people around you. I’d love to hear one of your stories.

Let’s chat,

Susan

Laughing, because – YES! Thank you Susan for expressing so precisely what I think. (1 Corinthians 5:12, in addition to practically everything John writes).

Somehow 1 Corinthians 5:12 didn’t seem to make it into some Christians’ Scripture memorization programs, Jennie. 🙁

I agree that the discussion has been pretty harsh. It was shocking to many that our Supreme Court would make that decision, but if people had been paying attention to past rulings I don’t think that they would have been surprised. I believe that the church needs to be more humble and introspective of the high rate of divorce and infidelity in their own communities and be a more vibrant example of love and marriage in general. We can affect our culture more by our lives and examples and by voting than being loud and angry voices.

Yes, more humility and introspection is definitely needed (1 Corinthians 1:12 as Jennie mentioned above). I loved your comment to be a more vibrant example of love and marriage in general, Connie. So true.

Hey look at that! I put a scripture reference and it pops up automatically! Cool.

      That’s funny, Jennie. 🙂

Susan, I thought this was spot on, thank you! I’ve read Secret Thoughts of an Unlikely Convert by Rosaria Champagne Butterfield and thought her story is such an awesome reminder of the change He can bring about in all of us!

    1. Susan Gaddis

Thanks, Christina. I’m about half way through Rosaria’s book right now. Isn’t it a wonderful story with much advice for believers who want to learn to love well? I’m enjoying it very much.

You are so right Susan love is our calling, and I would not want to judge any one Lord knows how mush I need his help and so thankful He got me out of the pit I mad of my life, If I sad any thing Sunday that sounded like I was judging I am so sorry , I was not going to say anything but my mouth would not stop I am praying about our rights to teach our children, that thay have ther rights to pray in school ,read there bible now we lost our rights and have to give them the Gov. shots and I fell the M.M.R. shot gave Robert and others Autism, we are all Gods children and we are all sinners and need His Grace , I would love to chat with you and see how you fell about that part, My heart hurts for our children that are in school now, praying for peace in my heart and I know Father has this.
    lov Cheryl

I didn’t think you were being judgmental on Sunday, Cheryl. I think you were processing and expressing your concerns, which are very valid. And as far as requiring children to be vaccinated, I believe that decision rests with the parents. Unfortunately, the government believes otherwise.

As I see it, there is no point arguing on theological bases the recent ruling on same-sex marriage with someone who neither believes in God nor the Bible. One cannot expect an unbeliever to neither understand spiritual matters, nor expect for them to even want to.
What does concern me is that when there is lack of any accountability, then there are no limits, no standards, no moral responsibility…anything goes. It’s easier to say one does not believe in God or the Bible, than to feel that that one has to submit to something or someone greater than themselves and their own personal desires.
So then, how do we teach values to our children? Who decides that my right to do things as I want is greater than your right to do things your way? Where is the plumb line? Is it in man-made laws no matter how low or how high they may seem? Is it in what the heart wants? Is it in my own standard of right and wrong?
Same-sex marriage…with the media and LGBT movement, it was just a matter of time before this law was passed. But there will be much more that will come in its time. I’m afraid the even those who today are celebrating the passing of this law will one day regret the doors this has opened. What I do believe that the one good thing that can come from this ruling is that it would, or at least should, draw believers to walk closer to God and to earnestly seek Him. That we do not see this ruling as an opportunity to do what ever enters our heart (which can be deceitful), but to draw us to our knees to pray for God’s strength and for our children and grandchildren, who will be growing up in this world that is spiraling downward. I like what Glenn Burris once said…When I one day stand before God, what will matter will not be if I was politically correct, but if I was biblically correct. We are living in the last days, there are signs everywhere.

  8. Susan Gaddis

Nicely said, Deborah. I do hope this causes people to pray more than they ever had for the coming generations that will live with the repercussions of this decision. And I agree… there are last day signs everywhere. Time to pray and love and trust and hope and and experience the Spirit’s move once again.
