Five Easy Easter Ideas to Do With Children and Grandchildren

Looking for some easy Easter ideas that can become traditions for your family? Since Easter is the most important holiday for Christians, it is a perfect time to offer activities that will leave a lasting impression on our children and grandchildren.

So Hello Monday and Hello Easter! I hope you can use a few of the following ideas with the kids in your life.

Five Easy Easter Ideas

1. Feeling creative? Make a crown of thorns with your kids using a berry vine with thorns. Twist it until it resembles a crown. Be sure to wear gloves! Place it over your front door to remind your family of the pain Jesus suffered on his way to the cross.

2. Rent The Passion of the Christ for the main event of a family movie night. Provide popcorn, ice cream, pillows, and a favorite beverage. Talk about the movie after it is over. (For young children, consider renting Veggie Tales – An Easter Carol.)

3. Meg Cox shares this idea in The Book of New Family Traditions:

Julie Young had just moved and needed a simple ritual. For the week leading up to Easter, she gathered pretty candles and set them up in the living room. Right before bedtime, she would turn out the lights, light the candles, and read about “the events of Jesus’s last week on earth” from a book called The Book of God for Children. Each child was allowed to blow out one candle before going up to bed.

4. In the mood for baking? Try tackling the sugary mess of making and frosting sugar cookies in the shape of a cross. Hot cross buns are another Easter favorite. When deciding what to bake, choose a kid friendly recipe that can become an Easter tradition for your family.

5. Easter Sunday deserves to be different. Rise before dawn on Easter morning and provide a lighted candle or flashlight for each family member. Step out into the dark and watch the light illuminate the darkness.

Read Luke 24:1-12 and John 8:12 together as a family. Close in prayer thanking God that Jesus came into the world to be our light and our salvation. Enjoy a special Easter morning breakfast together.

Now it’s your turn: what Easter family tradition are you passing down to your children and grandchildren? Share your easy Easter ideas in the comment section below.

RESURRECTION COOKIES…bake in the oven overnight, in the morning see the “empty tomb” When I discovered this recipe, my son was older…I remember doing it and bringing them in to my Sunday School kids and sending them home with the recipe to make at home.

I’ve never heard of Resurrection Cookies, Cindy! Can you share the recipe with us? They sound so fun. 🙂

  2. Elyn

They are made of meringue, and once they are cooked, there is nothing in the center but air – an “empty tomb.” You can find a recipe if you go to the Squidoo site and search for “resurrection cookies.”

Thanks Elyn, I’ll look them up. Sounds perfect for making with the grandkids. 🙂
