Blueberry ice cream and banana bread by Susan Gaddis on Holy in the Daily

Hello Monday, and hello to autumn reading! And banana bread. And Tom’s favorite ice cream.

Crisp weather on a Monday morning launches my autumn reading—books that call me to reflect on my journey with Jesus.

Saturday was blustery, so I made Blueberry Lavender Ice Cream and Banana Bread, both from the Spunky Coconut cookbooks.

Then I crawled my bookshelf for the books that mentor me in autumn. The house smelled delicious as Tom devoured my cooking, and I consumed a few moments of quiet reflection.

Today I’ve gathered those books and stacked them next to my comfy sofa ready to read and, of course, share with you. Each book on my autumn reading list has short chapters suitable for reading during lunch or early morning devotions. The stretching they offer grows me in unanticipated, but necessary ways.

And yes, I really do re-read these books every few years. I need these mentors in my life.

Autumn reading with The Cloister Walk

The Cloister Walk by Kathleen Norris

No matter how many times I read The Cloister Walk, Kathleen Norris fashions my spiritual journey with beautiful depth.

Autumn reading with The Graces We Remember

Autumn Reading of The Graces We Remember by Phyllis Tickle

Able to see the extra-ordinary in the ordinary, Phyllis Tickle’s stories from the Farm in Lucy create a sense of gathering and preserving the things of God in my soul. You’ll laugh, cry, and hold your life closer as you read The Graces We Remember.

Autumn reading with The Body Broken

Autumn Reading of The Body Broken by Robert Benson

Robert Benson has this knack for making me look at my life as he evaluates his own. The Body Broken challenges me to love those I live and work among—even when I don’t want to.

Autumn reading with The Gift of Years

Autumn Reading of The Gift of Years by Joan Chittister

As a grandmother not getting any younger, and as one who often counsels those caring for aging parents, The Gift of Years is a must-read. Joan Chittister’s style of questioning and telling the truths of life infuse this book with tools for growing older gracefully.

So what are you reading this autumn? Share your list with us in the comment section below.

Well, I’d better finish up my newsletter. It comes out this week, and I’m excited to share it with those of you who have signed up for it. Until then, Susan

I want to read one of these. Which would you recommend for me?

I think you would enjoy any of them, Carolyn. However, knowing you and the things you are going through, The Cloister Walk would probably be a good one for you.
