Those involved in prophetic prayer need to dress appropriately, and 21st century attire for an intercessor hasn’t changed over the last 2,000 years. So join me in this 4th post in our series on prophetic prayer as we go shopping for your spiritual wardrobe.

Supplicant, warrior, or watchman—the attire is all the same. Here’s the latest fashion from the Armor of God shopping mall:

Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God (Ephesians 6:13-17, NIV).

Helmet of Salvation for prophetic prayer

How can we be alert to the 3 types of demonic attacks if our mind is occupied with thoughts of hopelessness, offense, defensiveness, anger, lies, assumptions, and other wrong ways of thinking? How can we watch for enemy advances if our mind dwells on things counter to truth? How can we stand before the Judge of All the Earth to plead for another if we don’t understand our courtroom privileges?

The answer is this handy little helmet of salvation created by Calvary and Son. It counters all the wrong mental processing that trips us up in our relationship with God and with other people.

Our confidence to stand before God and before the enemy depends on the work of Jesus and a renewed mind (Romans 12:2).

So strap on the helmet of salvation by meditating on, and living out, such Scriptures as John 3:16; Romans 3:22-26; 1 John 5:20 and Ephesians 2:8, 9.

Breastplate of Righteousness for prophetic prayer

A breastplate protects the vital organs of the heart and lungs. Our breastplate consists of God’s righteousness. This covering guards our emotions and keeps us from relying on our feelings or trusting in our own performance.

Feelings of shame, unworthiness, and “wrongness” just aren’t appropriate attire for an intercessor. We’re dressed in our breastplate when we stand in the “rightness” of God’s redemptive grace (see 1 Corinthians 1:30).

Belt of Truth for prophetic prayer

So often we end up collaborating with the enemy without realizing it. That’s why we need this fashionable belt!

The belt of truth fits snugly around the waist of those who determine to live as people of the word and people of integrity. The truth of God’s word should so surround us that it affects everything we think and do. An intercessor’s reputation encompasses honesty, reliability, uprightness, and scriptural understanding.

Shoes of Peace for prophetic prayer

The versatile shoes of peace are soft enough for any peacekeeper, yet equally strong and durable for war. Well fitted and stylishly designed, they reflect the will and actions of Jesus Christ who walked in peace among men, yet waged war with the forces of evil.

Our daily walk should display the Spirit’s fruit and be in step with the Spirit (see Galatians 5:22-26.)

Shield of Faith for prophetic prayer

A huge shield of faith protects our mind, heart, will, and actions. With such a faith shield we are able to “extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.”

We reinforce this shield by meditating on Scripture and then obeying what we have internalized (Romans 10:17). Scripture spoken out through faith becomes an invisible, protective shield about us and provides assurance of non-tangible, spiritual things (Hebrews 11:1).

However, this shield can only be wielded by those walking in love (Galatians 5:6). (Do I hear groans out there?)

Sword of the Spirit for prophetic prayer

The word of God as our sword of the Spirit is our only offensive weapon. Just as God’s words pierced a void and created a world, so his word is able to pierce the darkness of Satan’s domain.

As we learn to apply his word we gain confidence in wielding our sword. Speaking the word boldly forth to a demonic foe becomes easier. Demons tremble at the believer who knows both the power of the spoken word-sword and expect it to accomplish that for which it is intended.

Well? How do you look in your outfit? Awesome, I know.

Thanks for joining me, and I’ll see you on Thursday.
